OVERVIEW

This home in McLean, VA was originally built in 1882. The homeowner decided to restore the homes original features! 

The main house was built in the late 19th century. A large addition was installed in the early 1990's. Vinyl siding was installed over the orignal wood siding at that time. The siding had some minor warping and fading. The owners wanted to tranform this homes original details. Vinyl siding was not an acceptable option for this property. The owner researched many different exterior products. Hardie siding was the best option to restore the orignal wood look.  Hardie house wrap was installed to create a thermal barrier. Hardieplank smooth lap siding was installed on the main house. Hardie shingles were added to accent the gables. Board & Batten was selected to add interest to the garage addition. The siding on the

original cottage house was replaced with Board & Batten to match the garage. Hardie products are an excellent way to recreate historic charm. This customer now has a beautiful, low maintenance exterior. This view shows the front 2nd floor 

of the Mclean, VA home. The 4" picture frame trim around the windows creates a nice contract in color. This side of the house receives direct sunlight during most of the day. Siding colors will appear lighter when the sun shines. The siding in the gables is Hardie staggered shingle.

This is a closer view of the turret

above the front porch. This is a common detail for Victorian style homes. Hardieplank lap siding was intalled on the turret. Hardie trim was installed on the corners and windows.

Here you see an image from the right side of the home. Notice how the Sail Cloth siding color looks darker in the shade? Be sure to ask your siding contractor for color samples prior to placing an order. Place them on different sides of your home to see how the color appears on your property.

This photo shows closer view of the side entry door. Smooth Hardie panels were installed with a shadow box detail. This detail works well on bay windows also. The panels are separated by a 4" Hardie trim board. The siding panels are the Sail Cloth color. The 4" trim is Arctic White.

The right side of the image shows horizontal lap siding around the doors. The small gable with the arch window has Hardie shinglesiding. Not all siding contractors are capable of correctly installing this much detail. Be sure to select Hardiesiding contactors from their website.

Here is a closer look at the Hardie Shingle. This product only comes in 7" exposure with the cedarmill texture in the MD/Northern VA market. Consult your siding contractor to see if this product is right for you.
