OVERVIEW
This home in Fairfax, VA had Masonite siding on the exterior. The original exterior was deteriorating and the owner knew it was time for a change!
This house was built in 1983. The windows were leaking air and the roof was starting to crumble. The original Masonite siding was rotting in many locations. The owner knew it was time to transform their exterior. After pricing multiple options, they decided Hardie siding, GAF Roofing, Pella windows, and Provia doors were the right choice. The owner researched many different exterior products. Hardie siding was the best option to restore the orignal wood look. Hardie house wrap was installed to create a thermal barrier. Hardieplank cedarmill siding was installed. The color of this home is Light Mist w/ Boothbay Blue Accents. Hardie products are an excellent way to recreate the look of wood without the maintenance. The porch columns were replaced with Hardie trim. A Provia Signet Series front entry door was installed. Pella Lifestyle windows with black exterior defines the new look. GAF Timberline roofing was selected to complete the look. This customer now has a beautiful, low maintenance exterior. This photo shows a closer view of the Light Mist Hardie lap siding. The cedarmill texture is a realistic representation of real wood siding. Be sure to hire an Elite Preferred Siding Contactor when having Hardie products installed. This is extremely important with custom details.
Many siding contractors aren't experienced with this product line. Improper installation will void the 30 Year Hardie Warranty.
The front porch was also given a face lift. The ceiling, columns, beam trim, and decking were all replaced. The ceiling si a beaded tongue & groove pine painted to match the Arctic White Hardie Trim. The columns and beams have Hardie Trim installed. The columns feature a Rams Crown/ OG detail. All Hardie siding & trim colors have a matching paint sold by Sherwin Williams.
This photo shows a closer view of the garage. This Craftsman style detail has become popular in traditional homes. Adding a Hardie shingle siding accent in a garage gable is a cost effective architectural detail. The most cost effective time to replace you exterior trim is when the siding is replaced. Not all siding contractors are capable of correctly installing these details. Be sure to find Hardie siding contactors directly from their website.
Here you see the view from the right side of the house. The 8" band trim @ the foundation and gable are a great way to separate transitions. The siding color contrasts well with the Arctic White trim color and black Pella windows. The foundation was painted Boothvay Blue to match the Hardie siding color in the gables.
The Hardie siding installation specifications require a 2" clearance above decking. This is an example of using trim coil as a feature to meet the Hardie requirement in an aesthetically pleasing detail. Be sure to select an experienced Hardie siding contactor to ensure the details on your home are done correctly. There are many Hardie contractors in Fairfax to choose from, but not all have the skills needed for an installation that will last.

This view shows the rear of the home. The Light Mist siding blends well with the Pewter Gray roofing color. Hardie trim was installed to update the colums on the rear bumpout. The black Pella Windows blend well with the deck rails. The Pella Lifestyle Series is an excellent choice when selecting a dark exterior window color. It performs better than vinyl windows coated in a dark color. Hardie Siding has many styles and colors to choose from. The color is baked on in the factory to avoid peeling and fading. "They far exceeded our expectations......"
The Pella Lifestyle frames offer a high end appearance without the maintenance of traditional wood. This Pella line offers different exterior colors without an increase to the cost of the windows. Wood clad windows won't have the expansion & contraction issues that come wih vinyl frames in darker colors. This image also shows an example of the inside corner detail where the Hardie Siding connects to the masonary chimney.
Here is closer view of the Rams Crown Column detail. These columns are 8" wide. Column sizes vary from 6"-12" in sizes. It's important to properly size columns to match the proportions of your home. These small details are what make any Hardie siding replacement project stand out in the neighborhoood.
The gables on this home were replaced with Hardie Shingle Siding in Boothbay Blue to provide a color contrast. Gables are an excellent location to add a siding accent. The is an 8" Arctic White band trim below the Shingle siding to separate it from the Light Mist lap siding below.
Here is a closer view of the Craftsman header window trim. The black Pella Window frames will really catch your eye next to the Arctic White Hardie Trim. This detail adds depth to the house without a huge price increase. These small details can make any house stand out in the neighborhood! This view shows the front corner of the Fairfax, VA home. The 4" Craftsman picture frame trim around the windows creates a nice contrast in color. The front of the house receives more sunlight than the sides. You'll notice the colors appear differently in the sun vs shade. Siding colors will appear lighter when the sun shines. The Pella Lifestyle product line has beautiful options for French Doors. This door has a real wood interior in the prefinished White. Black exterior clad. The door comes wih a multipoint locking mechanism whichs helps keep the door from warping over time. Lifestyle French Doors compliment Hardie Siding products very well. Be sure to ask your Hardie siding contractor about door options before it's too late! Pella products have been gaining popularity in Fairfax, VA.
Band boards are perfect for adding a color contract to any wall. They can also be used to separate two different Hardie siding products on the same wall. It can also be used to separate the siding from the foundation. This band board is 8' with a drip cap above. There is Z Flashing installed below the drip cap to prevent leaks. Hardie siding contractors must flash details like this properly to avoid long term water problems.
